While most RentersOnline.com users have success finding, or renting, their property, every so often we are informed of suspicious people attempting to scam or defraud our users. Always exercise caution when dealing with any transaction online.
How to deal with suspicious emails
If you receive an email you believe to be suspicious try doing a Google search for the email address in question. Often, you may find that other Internet users have posted information about suspicious emails and scams. Also, please contact us to report the address.
Safety Tips for Renters
- Never send or wire money as payment your deposit or rent. Avoid using payment services like Bidpay, Western Union, or Money Gram
- Never provide your confidential personal or financial information over the Internet unless you are certain the other party is legitimate
- Ask the owner to provide you with a phone number and call them
Be cautious when you encounter:
- An out of service phone number
- Someone that is reluctant to provide you with their phone number
- Someone that is requesting immediate payment to hold or rent the property when you have neither met in person, or seen the property
Safety Tips for Owners
- Ask all enquirers to telephone you, and/or to provide you with their telephone number.
Be cautious when you encounter:
- Someone who is very eager to send you money in advance without ever seeing the property
- Someone who claims to be coming to Canada from overseas and cannot provide you with a proper working phone number
- Someone who goes into great detail about their work, personal, or financial situation
One of the safest ways to address these problems is to ensure all transactions take place locally and in-person. It also helps to familiarize yourself with common online scams and fraud.
